Zmaj Jovina street is the most famous and historically important street in Novi Sad with a large number of shops, bookstores, cafes and restaurants.
Zmaj Jovina street is the main street in the pedestrian zone of Novi Sad. It extends from Liberty square to the "Vladičinski dvor". With the rest of the city center it is connected with the streets of "Laze Telečkog" and "Svetozar Miletić", as well as numerous passages where there are shops and offices of some associations and companies. At different times, the street changed its name. Some of the names were: Main Street, Hauptgasse, Fő Utca, Kossuth Lajos street, Kralja Petra I street, Maršala Tita street, and finally gets the name "Zmaj Jovina" by the celebrated Serbian poet. In this street there were always shops and stores, and the whole length of the street was a market. Today, there are many shops, several bookstores, as well as many cafes and restaurants. The oldest building is at number 28 - "Kod Belog lava", it dates back to 1720. This is considered to be one of the first houses built on the floor in Novi Sad. Buildings in Zmaj Jovina street belong to different styles - from Baroque, Classicism, to Neo-Renaissance. Most of the facades have been recently restored, so now you can fully see the beauty of the buildings in this street. The buildings have been reconstructed in the spirit of old times as if they were appealing to the old spirit. Therefore, it is of historical importance. The Monument to Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj is located in front of the Bishop's palace. The bronze figure of the Zmaj is made from granite from Jablanica. Every year in June, a part of the "Zmajeve dečije igre" is held at this monument.
