Tikvara is the only natural lake on the Danube formed by the moving the Danube riverbank. The lake is suitable for swimming and fishing, and for various water sports.
The protected areaof "Tikvara" Nature Park is located in the south of Bačka, along the left bank of the Danube river, in the territory of the municipality of Bačka Palanka, next to the settlement of Bačka Palanka. The Tikvara nature park is a protected area of category III - protected area of local significance, and according to the classification of The World Nature Conservation Union (IUSN) it is a V category: Lake Tikvara is the largest water surface of the nature park. It extends between the Danube river and a 1 km long embankment. It is the only natural lake on the Danube created by the movement of the Danube riverbed. It was named after boats - "tikvars" in which fishermen kept their fish. Blooming was experienced after the flood in 1965 when the water tank was deepened and acquired a primacy for sport fishing. The current function of this lake is for swimming and fishing, while beside the Belgrade "Ada Ciganlija" it is the only alternative for maintaining all types of water sports. Bačka Palanka is visited by the Danube regatta every year and the kayak school is also known here.
