The Grgeteg monastery is a women’s monastery and is located next to the place with the same name along the thick Fruška gora forest. It is decorated with beautiful icons.
This female monastery is located next to the town of Grgeteg along the thick Fruška gora forest. The legend says that the monastery of Grgeteg with the Church of St. Nicholas was founded by Vuk Branković, in the legends remembered as Zmaj Ognjeni Vuk, for his blind father back in the 15th century. The old stone church was replaced in the 18th century by a baroque building. In addition to the iconostasis painted by Uroš Predić in 1902, the icon "Trojeručica" is located in the temple, and the monastery is visited by many pilgrims. At one time this monastery had four mills, nine watermills and 200 acres of land, vineyards and meadows. Within the monastery complex there is a geological-palaeontological site of great significance. During World War Two, the monastery was badly damaged, a belfry was broken down and a large part of the cones collapsed. Today, the monastery complex is made up of a church, four-side ends and additional buildings.
