Monastery of Bođani

The monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is located in the village of Bođani and represents a cultural monument of exceptional significance

This religious and cultural site is located 15 km west of Bač, in the direction of the Danube, and belongs to the Eparchy of Bačka. The complex consists of a church, and accompanying facilities. The monastery was built by in the 15th century by a merchant from Dalmatia who, returning from Buda (today’s Budapest)had suddenly lost his eyesight, prayed to the Virgin, and upon his healing after washing his eyes with spring water, swore to build a church as a symbol of his gratitude.That is how the Bođani monastery was erected, dedicated to the presentation of the Blessed Virgin. The monastery was destroyed several times and burned. The monastery and the museum are rich with paintings, icons, and frescoes of Hristofor Žefarović, which is associated with the emergence of modern Serbian baroque art.
