Gymnasium of Karlovci

The Gymnasium of Karlovci is the oldest Serbian gymnasium, founded in 1792. in Sremski Karlovci. Currently, it is a philological gymnasium.

The Gymnasium of Karlovci is the oldest gymnasium in Serbia. When it started working on November 1, 1792, it had a total of three professors and classes, one of which was preparatory. Regarding the conditions of that time, it is assumed that it was exclusively a male school, and that the teaching was conducted in Latin. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the gymnasium with the Metropolis of Karlovci represented the spiritual and political support of the Serbs in the Habsburg Monarchy. In the benches of the Karlovci gymnasium, among others were Jovan Sterija Popović, Branko Radičević, Josif Rajačić, Vasa Stajić, and many others. Vuk Karadžić tried to enroll in the gymnasium, but he was too old with his 19 years of age. The Gymnasium of Karlovci is made in a museum like style. Cult classics were filmed in it such as Balkan Express, Thw Elusive Summer of '68 and Barking at the Stars.
