Chapel of Peace

Not far from the center of Sremski Karlovci, this buliding stands for more than three centuries and every historian has to visit it.

The Chapel of Peace was built at the location where the signing of the Treaty of Karlowitz took place. The importance of the Treaty of Karlowitz is in that the humiliating obligation of paying tribute to the Turks was ended. After signing the peace, the Franciscans built a wooden chapel dedicated to the Lady of Peace. This chapel was destroyed by the Turks during the next conflict, so that after their defeat in the battle at Petrovaradin, the Franciscans built a new chapel in 1716. The present chapel was built in 1817. The building has an oval shape with a bell-tower and clock. There are four doors of which one is walled up to symbolically emphasize the end of the Turkish presence in these parts. The project of its reconstruction and presentation envisages presentation of the event through the holographic, three-dimensional illusion of peace signing, in the center of the inner space. A new electric installation has been introduced.
