The wealthies art museum of Serbian art of the newer era, it contains about five thousand works of art.
Matica srpska was founded in 1847 in Novi Sad. It acts sa an independent institution since 1958. Its permanent exhibition chronologically displays selected works from the entire art foundation, which contains about five thousand works of art important for the national history of the art of the newer era and the culture of the Serbian people in Vojvodina from the late XVII to the late XX century. Matica Srpska received all of its artwork from various people, took over some artwork from the Serbian Orthodox Church and other owners, purchased from private property or obtained by copying wall paintings and kept, studied, protected and used them under appropriate conditions. The art department in the gallery fund is classified into systematic collections of Serbian paintings, graphics, drawings, sculptures, oleographies and copies. All collections are available to the public. They can be seen in a permanent or temporary exhibitions.
