Ilion Castle

The Ilion Palace served the needs of Josif Rajačić who later became a Serbian patriarch. The city museum of Sremski Karlovci is located in this building today.

The Ilion palace is located in SremskiKarlovci. It was built between 1836 and 1848 for the needs of the residence of Josef Rajačić, Metropolitan of Karlovac (1842-1848), later Serbian Patriarch. In the yard of the palace there is a fountain "Patrijarhovac", built in 1864. The onsite church is dedicated to Epiphany. Over time, the building suffered several renovations. The first renovation was carried out in 1920 according to the plans of the Vienna architect Rudolf Zibek, by inserting brilliants. With these changes, it gained the look of the summer house from the time of Joseph II. The last works on the rehabilitation of the building were carried out in 2007. In 1948, the palace of Josif Rajačić was proclaimed a cultural monument, to be subsequently categorized as a cultural good of exceptional importance. Today, the museum of Sremski Karlovci, as part of the museum of the city of Novi Sad, is located in the palace. The museum has an ethnological collection of objects, with the room and a kitchen from the end of the 19th century.
