Sterija pozorje was first organized in 1956 as a competitive festival of national drama and theater to commemorate Serbian playwright Jovan Sterija Popović. Since then, it has been organized every year in May, with local and foreign theaters performing pieces written by Yugoslavian playwrights. The event's goal is to encourage the development of the theatrical arts. The festival's repertoire is selected by a committee. A jury of five judges the performances. Awards are given for the best performance, contemporary dramatic text, direction, scenography, stage music and acting. Several special awards are also possible to achieve. The student theater also allows drama students and professors to discuss their experiences and become acquainted with current events in the theatrical world. Drama workshops provide a large contribution to the professional development of actors, dramatists, producers and scenographers.
