Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad

The Serbian National Theater was founded 16/28. July 1861 in Novi Sad. There was already a long tradition of theater in Vojvodina, from school performances, up to private professional theater troups. At that time most inhabitants of Novi Sad were Serbs, a large number of them were highly educated, three quarters of the property and trade were in the hands of Serbs, so it is not by chance that the Serbian National Theater was established in Novi Sad. In Novi Sad, performances are played in the hall on the cafeteria "Kod sunca", in the cafe " Kod kraljice Jelisavete " (today's hotel "Vojvodina"), during the summer at the arena "Kod Zelenog Venca". The Serbian National Theater has always been one of the most important cultural institutions in the country, and it should not be forgotten that the Serbian National Theate initiated the establishment of other cultural institutions, such as the "Sterijino Pozorje" - Theater of Sterija in 1956.
